Human Centered Service Design Studio
Winter 2018
Northwestern | San Francisco
Human Centered Service Design Studio is a course offered to current Northwestern University undergraduate students who participate in a semester long immersion program at Northwestern's new San Francisco campus. In conjunction with client based project work, the course teaches the fundamentals of service design with a focus on experiential learning in design innovation, digital communication, and the intersection of technology and culture.
Week 1
We were introduced to Human Centered Service Design and learned about its past and present. We brought in artifacts from our memorable service experiences and went through a rapid design sprint.
Week 2
We understood how Service Designers identify opportunities for meaning and making through service. We honed our design research skills through feminine care. We heard from Senior Designer Sarah Fathallah on transitioning from a life of finance at the World Bank to one of a designer.

Week 3
We learned about the diversity of stakeholders in a service context and how to optimize design for all stakeholders. We worked to understand how adjacent services create service ecologies and worked on our portfolios with George and Delfina.
Week 4
We learned how to synthesize research findings and develop a unique point of view that inspires ideation. We were introduced to Adobe Creative Suite while working late into the night preparing for our mid-term project review.
Week 5
We spent late nights critiquing and getting our work ready for Intuit. We shared all of our work with our clients and received valuable feedback for how we should drive forward.
Week 6
We learned how to exercise and improve our ability to combine and experiment with ideas and held facilitated brainstorm sessions on our design opportunities. We spent the entire afternoon at Sony Playstation where we saw design teams in action on the latest in gaming. We even walked through a live design critique.
Week 7
We brought our ideas into context through storyboarding and developed a lens for which to explore, evaluate, and select ideas. We also learned how to build front end and back end of services through service blueprinting.
Week 8
We learned how to create and test experience prototypes and storyboards that engage clients, stakeholders and project partners. We put all of this into practice through some intense competitive prototyping with the game mockups. We heard from Aubrey Kraft of Kaiser Permanente on service design in healthcare and toured IDEO where we heard from another Segal Alum Albert Leung on all of IDEO’s inspiring work.
Week 9
The final sprint to the finish line. We practiced individual techniques to express our ideas in a practical and imaginative way using a variety of forms: spoken, written and visual. We refined our deliverables, and final presentations, learned how to effectively transfer our project work to clients and drank lots of coffee.
Week 9
Down the home stretch we practiced individual techniques to express our ideas in a practical and imaginative way using a variety of forms: spoken, written and visual. We practiced creating thoughtful and engaging forums for client presentations and co-creation.
Week 10
The final sprint to the finish line. We refined our deliverables, and final presentations, learned how to effectively transfer our project work to clients and drank lots of coffee.
You are all awesome.
